Saints have played pivotal roll in the establishment of Islam as religion and the area has great significance in this regard as the first shrine of sub-continent Indo-Pak is situated here some 17 kilometers away which is a place of religious activities and mental satisfaction.
Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawali Mashaikh name before embracing adopting Islam was Rai Chawala and changed to Sher Muhammad. According to the references available Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawali father Raja Mahinpal was follower of Buddhism and was chief of Rajpoot Lakkan tribe of Sindh and his one Rani was from Chunian District Kasur and Baba Haji Sher Muhammad was her son and other child was a daughter named as “Kanganbars”.
The mother of Baba Haji Sher Muhammad brought a village in her dowry and name of the village is Kanganpura which isstill exists in Tehsil Chunian of District Kasur. Baba Haji Sher and his sister Kanganbars were very keen in Islam and both adopted Islam and in result the whole family becomes their enemy and they martyred Hazrat Baba Haji Sher on 27th Ramadan-ul-Mubarak 131 Hijri when he was offering a prayer and later the sister also died in murkiness of brother.
Baba Haji Sher Dewan embraced Islam when he was arrested in war between Waliey Sindh and Islamic forces Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan also participated in the war and was detained and brought to Madina as a prisoner where he was very much touched by the preaching of the religion and accepted Islam on the hands of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and got education from the different Sahaba-e-Ikram and he also performed Hajj there. Hazrat Baba Haji Sher spent some days on the shrine of Hazrat Awais Qarni (RA) and got mysticism from there.
Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan religious and Sufism importance is very high and other Sufis preachers of Islam including Hazrat Baba Faridudin Masud Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Bahuddin Zakrai Multani, Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari, Hazrat Usman Marvandi-Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nannak stayed at his shrine and performed chillah there. Hazrat Baba Faridudin Ganj Shakar (RA) was born at this place and shrine of his parents still exist there.
Hazrat Baba Faridudin Masud Ganj Shakar performed a chillah hanging on threat in a well for twelve consecutive years. A famous mosque is still there where the four sufis including Hazrat Baba Faridudin Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Bahuddin Zakrai Multani, Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari, Hazrat Usman Marvandi (Lal Shahbaz Qalandar spent their time.
Shrine of Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan is famous place for the patients of mental diseases and they are being chained here at the shrine for three consecutive days and nights and it is said that they got well in the end by the spiritual power.
This act also received a lot of criticism from the health professionals but people’s belief is still there. Kheer a sweet dish made with rice and milk is famous which is served among the people and on the day of Urs a rain of solid sweets among the devotees is also famous act. Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi first completed the shrine with the cost of 50 thousand rupees and Mughal empror Jahnagir also renovated it in his days and later Dewan Mool Raj reconstructed the shrine with the touch of 17th and 19th century’s architecture.
Urs of Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawali Mashaikh will commence from July 9th, 2009 and will remain continue for three days and devotees from around the country will take part in the Urs celebrations.
